Lighting And Energy Management
Lighting for Mood and Security
You can program your lights to go on, off, or dim to match your moods and needs for comfort and security. You can have bright lights when you're eating, dimmed lights for dessert, "mood lights" for your home theater, and reading lights when you snuggle down with a good book, says Pamela Colbertson-Krieger, an analyst with Frost & Sullivan, a market research firm.
Eating out at a restaurant? You can remotely check your system via your telephone, cell phone, or PDA, she adds.
Say you're throwing a dinner party. As the guests arrive, you can remotely turn your porch light on, and a wireless detector or audio system can alert you that someone is at the door. In your smart home, you can even remotely unlock the door, greet guests, and direct them to the kitchen.
Energy management
Energy conservation becomes a snap with home automation. Your home's HVAC (heat, ventilation, and air conditioning) can all be programmed for maximum energy efficiency based upon outside/inside temperature and humidity. These are much smarter, more efficient and keep you more comfortable than the setback thermostats you can buy at the hardware store. When you leave in the morning, your automated system calibrates to the right temperature so that you don't waste energy when you're not around, says Ray Boggs, an industry analyst with International Data Corporation, a market strategy firm.
